Andaz Apna Apna

Amar (Aamir Khan) and Prem (Salman Khan) are two village ne'er-do-wells who dream of becoming rich without working for it -- by marrying a rich heiress, Raveena (Raveena Tandon). They meet on a bus and discover that they are both out to win the heiress. Each of them tries various ploys to eliminate his rival, all of which fail ludicrously. In the end, Amar and Prem agree to join forces, insinuate themselves into the heiress' household, and there compete for Raveena's love.

Amar starts annoying Raveena with rubbish. In the end, Raveena, quite fed up with him, hits him with a log of wood. Amar acts as if he is unconscious. He is taken into Raveena's mansion, where he is attended by Prem, pretending to be a doctor. After some skirmishing for Raveena's attention, Prem finds himself increasingly attracted to Karisma (Karisma Kapoor), Raveena's secretary. What Amar and Prem don't know is that Karisma is the real heiress. She switched places with her secretary in an attempt to find a man who would love her for herself, not for her money.

Amar and Prem then concoct an inane plot to win the confidence of the heiress's father by first kidnapping and then rescuing him. But they do not know that the father's evil twin has plans to kidnap him too, and start living as him. So both the evil twin and Amar & Prem send their men to kidnap him. But the evil twin's men take him by rendering the men sent by Amar & Prem unconscious. Amar & Prem then decide that they will really have to rescue him.

But to make things even worse (and funnier), the evil twin himself has an enemy, Crime Master Gogo (Shakti Kapoor), who then enters the plot. He takes everyone hostage, including Raveena, Karishma, their father and the evil twin. Amar Prem go to rescue them all. Comic hilarity ensues.

The film is also indirectly indicative of Indian Society of the time, with indirect references to unemployment (the lead characters leave home for riches), Indian obsession with everything 'foreign' and associating going abroad with becoming wealthy (the father of the rich heiress lives in London).

Trivia

The article could be improved by integrating relevant items and removing inappropriate ones.

* The movie is reported to have taken over three years to complete because of the constant fights and ego clashes between the lead pair Aamir Khan and Salman Khan. However the two share a deep friendship as of today.
* This is possibly the only film in the country with titles showing names of all the stars of the film Aamir and Salman at the same time.
* This was and still is the only movie that featured Aamir Khan and Salman Khan together.
* The movie is a spoof of number of Bollywood movie scenes .
* In the scene where Aamir Khan cuts the ribbon of the lock-up, the song "Papa Kahete Hai" from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak is played. This was the hit song of the movie that made Aamir Khan a box office success.
* Aamir Khan also makes a reference to his then competitor Shahrukh Khan.
* Juhi Chawla and Govinda make cameo appearances as themselves in the beginning of the movie.
* In one of the scenes, Prem (Salman Khan) claims to have seen Sholay 10 times, and Amar (Aamir Khan) quips that his dad had written the movie. Salman Khan's real-life father, Salim Khan did indeed write the script for Sholay.
* Mehmood's character owns a film studio called "Wah Wah Productions". This is a reference to Mehmood's earlier film _Pyaar Kiye Jaa (1966)_ where he plays a person who has his own film productions also called "Wah Wah Productions".
* The whole part towards the end where Aamir Khan compliments Shakti Kapoor, is a reference and tribute to the film Sholay (1975).
* Shakti Kapoor's character, Crime Master Gogo, is supposedly the nephew of Mogambo, the villain immortalised by Amrish Puri in Mr. India. The movie also makes references to the famous line "Mogambo Khush Hua" (Mogambo is pleased) during the many confrontations between Bhalla and Robert and Crime Master Gogo. Crime Master Gogo continually steals something from the two hired goons, as it is "the family business". On his departure, he starts the phrase by saying "Gogo..." while Robert finishes the sentence "Khush Hua" (Gogo... Khush Hua = Gogo is happy).
* The names of the lead actresses are their original names Karishma and Raveena.
* There were two more songs of Andaz Apna Apna. 'Jana tu ne jana nahi' which was sung by the female singer like the older days Shamshad Begum and echos the era of 50's like other songs of Andaz Apna Apna. But the song was never picturised. Surprisingly, the title song of the film 'Shola shola tu bharkey' that includes the wordings 'Andaz apna apna' was even picturised, but for some unknown reason was deleted from the final version of the film.
