It's been 16 years since his debut film 'Maine Pyar Kiya' hit the theatres, but the man hasn't lost a bit of his charm or popularity. A philanthropic soul who wouldn't think twice before helping the poor and the needy, Sallu (as he is fondly called) has now got 'Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya' on the anvil.

'Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya' is an adaptation of 'Cactus Flower'?

You can term it that way if you insist, but it's done in a very David Dhawan style.



What's your role in the film?

I play a doctor who doesn't want to get married, and hence he lies to everyone that he is married. To cover up one lie, he has to lie time and again.



You and David Dhawan seem to be a hit combination?

I love doing comedies and Dhawan is expert at that. Over the years, Dhawan has become very confident and has also improved a lot on the technical front. He is always positive and exudes goods vibes. This goes a long way in giving me the impetus I need to better my output. Plus he is very good at budgeting and extremely skilful at making films in time.



But 'Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya' has not finished as scheduled, plus it has gone over-budget too?

'Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya' was a difficult film to make. It required many locales. That's the main reason why the film has gone a little over-budget and behind schedule. This time you are working with both your brothers at the same time? Throughout the film, I felt at home. Arbaaz is the best comedian amongst the three of us. Sohail too has done wonderfully well. In fact, I learnt quite a bit about comedy from Arbaaz. I don't know why Arbaaz has always been projected as an action hero on screen. It's time that filmmakers sit up and take notice of his comic timing. Arbaaz has just one scene, but it will have everybody in splits.



What about Katrina's presence in the film?

Katrina's presence adds to the freshness in the film.



What is the film you are doing with Raj Kumar Santoshi?

It's a love triangle, which also has Ajay Devgan. It starts in August.



bYou had problems with Ajay Devgan during the making of 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'?

No. I didn't have any problem with Ajay.



Given a chance to work in the films which your dad (Salim) wrote, which one would be your choice?

It has to be 'Deewar'. It's an absolutely great film.



Are you doing a special dance number in 'Fight Club'?

Yeah. 'Fight Club' is my brother Sohail's film. If Shah Rukh can do an item song for Karan Johar, why can't I do an item song for my brother?



Now you won't be able to do smoking scenes in films. The government recently proposed that a ban in this regard will be implemented from October 2?

I have done smoking scenes in only two films so far- 'Maine Pyar Kiya' and 'Tere Naam'. However, if you asking me about the decision, I don't think that it's a wise move to impose a blanket ban in this regard.
