Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai: At Last, a
great entertainer
Theres something about Rakesh Roshan
and comebacks! It's a combination that has a deadly effect on the box office.
In Khoon Bhari Maang, we saw ugly
duckling Rekha transform into glorious swan Rekha as she returns from the jaws of a
crocodile to take her revenge... and give Rakesh Roshan a hit.
In Karan Arjun, Shah Rukh Khan and
Salman Khan opt for the rebirth route and a superhit film.
In Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, something
similar happens with Hrithik Roshan. When Rohit (Hrithik) disappears, Raj (Hrithik again)
makes his entry. The result? We think Rakesh Roshan has another hit on his hands.
Well, of
course, it is not as simple as that! There are other factors -- the music is good, the
songs are catchy, the cinematography is appealing, the direction is unobtrusive and the
story is actually 'different.' There is actually an element of novelty in the film --
though it is still a romance!
Hrithik, as we said earlier, begins the film
as Rohit, a young man with a good voice who dreams of dazzling the world with his songs.
An orphan, he lives with his younger brother, Amit (Abhishek Sharma), and rents a room
with the kindly DSouzas (Farida Jalal, Satish Shah).
Like many other young men, one day he spots
Sonia (Amisha Patel). Both fall gloriously in love.... And if you think you can predict
the rest of the story line based on this beginning, think again!
For Rakesh Roshan has
done a commendable job as director, subtly spicing this teenage love story with a hefty
dose of suspense. The story in itself provides a pleasant element of change.
Then, Rajesh Roshan's music is quite in the
hummable variety. And Chand sitare, the first song in the film, is picturised
well, setting the tone for the remainder. Whether it's the cruise song, Pyar ki kashti
mein, or the Lucky Ali rendered Ek pal ka jeena or even the title song, the
songs are good to watch. Thumbs up, Farah Khan!
But it's not all hunky-dory. Once we cross the
intermission barrier, the film does begin to flag a bit. The second half does not match
the entertainment value of the first, it could definitely have been much slicker.
Even the story
seems to lose its pace a little towards the end. We also did feel Johny Lever was, for
once, an unnecessary element. Kaho Naa... would actually have been better-off
without his five-minute cameo.
One must say Rakesh Roshan knew what he was
doing when he cast Hrithik as the lead. The boy is good. The ease and style with which he
dances, emotes, fights, makes one forget this is his debut film. Hes had to essay
two different characters, and hes done justice to both. He seems to be the most
promising among the recent lot of star sons we have been subjected to. Of course, his
looks have been a little over-hyped in the film, as every girl in town drools over him and
goes, "Oooh, hes so handsome!"
Amisha Patel has also
done a fair job. She may not be a classical beauty, but renders her character as a chirpy,
spoilt 18-year-old quite well. Anupam Kher (who plays Amishas father) and Dalip
Tahil are the bad guys. Sharad Saxena and Mohnish Behls roles as corrupt police
inspectors are not even worth a mention.
All in all, though, Kaho Naa
covers the brief. It is a good entertainer and, since thats what films are supposed
to do, you can head for the nearest theatre.

| Synopsis |
Rohit (Hrithik Roshan) and his kid brother (Abhishek) live as
paying guests with a lovable but childless couple (Satish Shah and Farida Jalal). Rohit
falls in love with Sonia, the daughter (Amisha Patel) of a business tycoon, but her father
doesn't approve of the match because of the class barrier. Rohit then sets off to make a
name for himself but is murdered. Shattered, Sonia leaves for her uncle's place in New
Zealand but meets Rohit's lookalike Raj (Hrithik in a double role). She once again returns
to India but Raj is smitten by her and follows her, only to narrowly escape being killed
himself. Sonia and Raja are forced to run away, which is when they discover that Rohit was
murdered because he was witness to the murder of a police commissioner. The finale of the
film reveals how Sonia and Raja unmask the evil doers and fall in love in the process.

Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hai promises much
There is heartening news for the film industry. It appears the six month-old jinx of
failures is over and better days are here at last. Rakesh Roshans Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai has stormed the
box-office. The initial reports and opening collections are electrifying. Industry sources
even predict Kaho Naa... may well be the biggest hit of 2000. No other recent release was
greeted with this kind of euphoria. 1999, a year when films which succeeded did so only in
some pockets, and not all circuits, may soon be dismissed as a bad dream.
Rakesh Roshan, the maker who has successfully
launched his son Hrithik opposite newface Amisha Patel in his latest film, is overwhelmed.
"It is a big hit everywhere. Overseas, its done phenomenal business just as
its done in India. Even in small centres like Patna, the film got a great
welcome," he said.
Kaho Naa... Pyar Hai is likely to have a
positive ripple effect on subsequent releases, as well, such as the Shah Rukh Khan-Juhi
Chawla production, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, which is due on January 21. Also due on
the same day are the horror flick, Ek Aur Maut and the dubbed movie, Police Ka Thana Chor
Ka Khazana.

Kaho Naa...HIT HAI
The industry can finally celebrate. After
a series of eminently forgettable films, the enviable opening response to Rakesh
Roshans Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai is like a symbol of good times to come. For
Hrithik Roshan, a rank newcomer, has done with Kaho Naa... what Aamir Khan
couldnt do with Mela.
This is the most speculative and exciting part of moviedom.
The hottest of stars can fail and the guy with no name or experience to his credit can set
the cash registers ringing. Like Hrithik and Kaho Naa...
The film began its attempt at the box office with Rajesh
Roshan's catchy score. And when the youngsters tripped out on the music, director Rakesh
Roshan knew his film had more than a fighting chance of making it. Especially since the
choreography was good and he had a sexy new boy as the lead. What else did the audience
need?
Now that the opening day figures are out, we know that dad
Rakesh and uncle Rajesh have succeeded in introducing a new hero, something the industry
needed very badly. The response in the overseas circuit has also been good; it was much
better than the one accorded to Mela. It will be great if Hrithik is also
accepted abroad, as more and more film-makers are targeting the fertile overseas market.
As of now, except for the three Khans -- Shah Rukh, Salman
and Aamir -- and Anil Kapoor, no hero is hot in the overseas territory. So the film-makers
who are also looking at the overseas audience have been limited to one of these four. But
they may soon have a fifth choice if KN... PH hits the bulls eye.
The new girl, Amisha Patel, has also been accepted. She
looks cute and her performance, like Hrithik's, belies the fact that it is her debut film.
The awkwardness one associates with new faces is completely absent in Kaho Naa..
Actually, Hrithik is being discussed more than the film. But only time will tell whether
this will benefit KN... PH.

REVIEW OF KAHO NA PYAR HAI
After Khudgarz (Plus points being Neelam and one of my favorite songs "Aapke
Aa Ja Ne Se"), King Uncle (With sexy Anu Agarwal and Jackie Shroff), Kishan
Kanhaiya (Anil Kapoor in a double role), Khoon Bhari Mang, Karan Arjun, and Koyla (Plus
points being Deepshikha), Rakesh Roshan brings us Kaho naa... Pyaar Hai. Rakesh Roshan
sure hit the nail on the head when he claimed that his Kaho naa... Pyaar Hai would be an
entertainer. He also hit the nail on the head when he claimed that son Hrithik would be
the next big thing. When Rajesh Roshan claimed his music to be "different", he
wasn't lying, it is different and good. And Amisha Patel, looking a lot like Neelam and
pretty good for a newcomer, is a breath of fresh air. Yes, folks, I'm telling you all to
go see KNPH, a movie with which I had low expectations. The film ended up being very
entertaining and Hrithik makes Bobby and Akshaye look bad with his stunning debut.
The film has everything, romance, action, and,
most importantly, a bit of suspense. Struggling singer Rohit (Hrithik Roshan) and rich
brat Sonia (Amisha Patel) fall in love through a variety of interesting situations (Even
getting stranded on an island), much to the dismay of Saxena (Anupam Kher), Sonia's
pampering father. Trouble ensues when Rohit witnesses corrupt police officers (Ashish
Vidyarthi and Mohnish Behl) murder the police commissioner after he finds out about their
illegal drug syndicate. The villains kill Rohit, much to the dismay of Sonia, who is left
alone with cruel memories of her love. Heartbroken, she goes to New Zealand where she
meets a young man named Raj (Hrithik again), who looks remarkably like our dead hero Rohit
(Wow, who'd have thought?). The new twosome return to India only to have the villains
assume that Raj is Rohit and chase after him. The rest of the film (This is where the
suspense comes in...) focuses on who Raj really is and why he looks so much like Rohit. If
you think you'll see the same, tired, twin-brothers-separated-at-birth story, think again.
You've heard it all before, right? Well, I'll
let you see the film to decide. In my opinion, Rakesh Roshan has made a great film, which
may not be award winning, brilliant stuff, but entertains. The plot, while not entirely
new, is presented with style. The locations are beautiful, Hrithik and Amisha make a good
couple, and the songs are fantastic. Hrithik acts pretty well for his debut. The film
practically showcases his talents, of which he has many. Hearing the female audience in
the theater go nuts over how "hot" he is was irritating, but he's a great hero,
with charm, looks, and dancing skills. Amisha looks very good. She's got a beautiful face
that looks a lot like Neelam's and a killer body to match. She's not very tall, which is
definitely a negative point on my scale, but does a commendable job for a newcomer with
her role, which was totally overshadowed by Hrithik. Supporting cast members Farida Jalal,
Anupam Kher, Satish Shah, Mohnish Behl, and Ashish Vidyarthi are okay. Johny Lever is very
annoying in his thankfully short role.
Rajesh Roshan's music sounded great to me on
the soundtrack, but watching the songs on breathless locations such as Greece, Fiji
Islands, New Zealand, and a cruise ship made them even better. Lucky Ali's two numbers are
great, and the title track is very catchy. Rakesh Roshan's direction is good. It's nice to
see him bounce back after Koyla, which was enjoyable as well, but was very far-fetched.
Overall, Kaho naa... Pyaar Hai is certainly no
must see, but after garbage like Mela and Bulandi, it's certainly good to see a
commendable effort from an Indian film maker, and a "great entertainer", a title
which Mela couldn't live up to.

INTRODUCING HRITHIK ROSHAN
Hrithik
Roshan would easily be charged for mass murder. Rippling muscles, devastating
light-green eyes, a killer smile, an affable charm coupled with the T.D.H factor is what
makes Rakesh Roshan Jr. click - and in a big way too. Ask any shutterbug worth his Nikon
and he can't stop raving aloud about those oh-so-purrfect muscles, that dreamy good look,
that abundance of confidence, the obvious talent. And best of all, ask the girls next door
who can't stop drooling over the latest pin-up boy to stormed the industry. They are the
best barometers of all. And to cap it all, ask the trade watchers and they'll vouch for
the fact that the Roshan dude is red-hot right now.
Even before his much anticipated launch film, 'Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai' - produced and directed
by proud papa Rakesh Roshan. On to Vinod Chopra, Vikram Bhatt, Raj Kanwar, Karan Johar,
etc., etc., the filmmakers simply love him, and what's more, they can't stop raving about
his (yup, again) phenomenal talent. 'He's like magic on screen. He's going to be a
super-star... I tell you!' insist the movers and shakers of movie town. And as if that
wasn't all, Hrithik is rumoured to have bagged Shah Rukh Khan's next home production (no
less), to be directed by Farah Khan. Ask him and the shy guy shrugs, "Yes, the
negotiations are on." Over to Hrithik now for an online chat. Girls hold on to your
hearts, guys don't turn green. But read on nevertheless..
